No more 100W bulbs

As part of the UE decision last December, next Tuesday the 100W bulbs will not be long sold in the EU market. This is part of the process of eliminating all low performance bulbs in 2012.
September next year all 75W bulbs will be gone, a year later the 60W ones, and by 2012 none of the old bulb types will be sold on the UE market.
The EU research estimates that the energy savings will be about 40 Terawatts per hour, this is like switching off the whole Romania and that will save about 15 millions tons of CO2 emissions.
Here in UK there is massive opposition to them, from people that complain about them being too dim - have they bought the right bulb, I ask - to associations of people that suffer migraine that claim that they have strong head aches caused by the small flickering of the light.

En algo que vamos adelante de la UE, ya aqui no se venden bombillos incandescentes y no creo ni que son más tenues, ni que den migrañas…solo es un pataleo de la industria que produce esos viejos e ineficientes productos.

Old and inefficient, yet easy to produce and recycle. By no means I’m saying incandescent light bulbs are “better” than the fluorescent lamp. In actuality 90% of the energy consumed by the ILB is emited has heat. The fluorescent lamp requires highly toxic metals to operate, and the construction of rather complex electronics that leave an extensive CO2 print. The fluorescent lamp lasts 10 to 20 times longer, yes, but its efficiency caps at 22% (only 12% more efficient than ILB). My point is this: we shouldn’t feel too comfortable with the fluorescent lamp: there is plenty of room to improve in it.
Perhaps we should be looking a little more at ultra-bright LED technology.
In any case, great post Adrian :)
