Horizon – BBC

Very few TV shows last years and years, and even less those of this list which we can really see during their existance. For one reason or another these TV programs usually are show in a very complicated time, even when some of them I consider to be esential to watch.
Somehow - I will not reveal it - I managed to get a good bunch of episodes of the well known and ever lasting BBC show called Horizon. This program, born in 1964 as part of other tv program called "The World of Buckminster Fuller", has already more than a thousand episodes. Initially the idea was to create a platform where some of the greatest cientifics and physolphers could comunicate their curiosities, observations and reflexions, and in this way infuse the general public all this knowledge. During its last days, it became an independant cience divulgative program, to say it in a few words.
During the last weeks I have been watching a good bunch of them, including some published on the early 80s and some publish more recently, in 2004 and 2005. My experience has been, I have to say, shocking. One must consider that the different episodes are directed and produced by diferent people and that each of them has a radically diferent content. Nevertheless, my experiece so far makes me realise how much the divulgative content of this program has changed during the last years. In early years you could feel how the main point of the show was to comunicate and raise diferent questions about the subject so the person watching could actually finish the program with a more or less clear understanding of what is the actual situation and main concerns in the matter. Later episodes give you a completely diferent feeling where special efects and sensationalism in the information they give tint any other parts of the show. In any case is worth to watch the series, have a look at the archive - see website below - to check if there any of your interest.
It is also quite intriging watching old episodes to realise how many of the cientific enigmas are still present today and that many of the very proudly discovered theories are now replaced or drastically updated.
These are some of the episodes that I most enjoyed so far:
- BBC - Horizon - 1980 - Astrology.
- BBC - Horizon - 1981 - Richard Feynman Interview
- BBC - Horizon - 1987 - Thinking
- BBC - Horizon - 2000 - Einstein's Miracle Year
You can find much more information in the BBC oficial website, which is not being updated anymore, but the BBC has left it as reference archive.
